Gigahertz and Terahertz: Technologies for Broadband Communications

Much has already been described in Section 7.1 concerning the roles of teleports and these roles include:
Providing a highly efficient on-ramp for the Internet and the information superhighway;
Providing services on a profit basis;
Providing for the shared use of complex and otherwise expensive facilities;
Appealing to multinational corporations as well as to other types of users;
Providing for a pooling of resources.
Teleports should not be seen as separate stand-alone entities but rather as installations or even virtual concepts that become naturally integrated with other surrounding and international systems and networks. This applies to essentially all forms of communications systems, including CATV and SMATV or SDTV. The concept also applies to primarily data networks such as LANs, metropolitan area networks (MANs), and wide area networks (WANs), and examples of the possible interconnections are shown in Figure 7.4.

Connections from SMATV or CATV networks are predominantly one-way whether between each other, between them and the teleport, or from CATV to MAN. All other interconnections, to and from LAN, MAN, or WAN and teleport, are two-way real time and most are optical fiber. MAN interconnections are shown at 155.52 Mbps (SDH level-1), corporate WANs operate at kilobits per second rates, and the standard 64-Kbps rate is indicated. A corporate LAN increasingly has gigabit Ethernet backbone capabilities and therefore a 1-Gbps information transfer rate is shown here.
Teleports are highly flexible and can...
