Chapter 5: Executing an International Project
An international project execution starts with leading the team, which includes leading the domestic team members, international team members, team contractors, customers teams, subcontractors teams, regulatory agencies teams, and the upper management. Nothing of significance happens without the knowledge of the project manager. The project manager has to be on top of every issue. Everyone related to the project comes to the project leader without any reservations to discuss project-related issues. You have to work harder than anyone in the team, solve team members issues, perform all the project management tasks and, at the same time, keep the team morale high by praising, encouraging, and smiling all the time.
Team Management
Remote controlling international project teams can be very stressful and time consuming. Despite tremendous advances in communication through e-mail, video conferencing, and teleconferencing, there is nothing to beat the face-to-face reality check. If you get the slightest indication that things are not moving forward the way they should, you or someone else designated by you should hop on a plane and go for a face-to-face reality check. If you sense some weakness in offshore team members, you should send a senior engineer to support the offshore team until the task is completed.
For an international project manager, individual team member meetings are more productive as compared to team meetings.
