Introduction to EVDO: Physical Channels, Logical Channels, Network and Operation

The services that EVDO can provide include high-data rate broadband transmission, streaming media, various levels of quality of service (QoS), multicast services, and location based services. It is also possible for EVDO to provide different classes of these services for different types of users.
The basic service that EVDO provides is efficient high-speed data transmission (called "high data rate service"). The maximum data transmission rates can be adjusted and capped for different types of users up to 2.45 Mbps (for different service rate plans).
HDR service can be data only or a mixture of voice and data services. An example of a data only service would be broadband wireless Internet service for a desktop that is provided by an external EVDO modem that plugs into the USB or RJ-45 Ethernet plug.
EVDO is an "always-on" type of service. When the EVDO device is initially turned on, it takes only a few seconds to obtain an IP address that is necessary to communicate with the network. Even when the EVDO device is inactive and placed in the dormant state, reconnection is typically less than 1/2 a second.
Stream prioritization service it the identification and management of information flow for different types of communication sessions. This allows the system to prioritize the delivery of packets for time critical applications such as IP telephony or audio streaming and to delay packets for non-real time applications such as email or web browsing.
