Metal cutting is a process in which a wedge-shaped cutting tool engages the workpiece to remove a layer of material in the form of a chip.
As the cutting tool engages the workpiece, the material directly ahead of the tool 1 is deformed (Fig. 27.1). The deformed material then seeks to relieve its stressed condition by flowing into the space above the tool as the tool advances. Workpiece section 1 is displaced by a small amount relative to section 2 along specific planes by a mechanism called plastic deformation.
When the tool point reaches the next segment, the previously slipped segment moves up further along the tool face as part of the chip. The portions of the chip numbered 1 to 6 originally occupied the similarly numbered positions of the workpieces. As the tool advances, segments...
