27.1 MECHANICS OF METAL CUTTING

Metal cutting is a process in which a wedge-shaped cutting tool engages the workpiece to remove a layer of material in the form of a chip.

As the cutting tool engages the workpiece, the material directly ahead of the tool 1 is deformed (Fig. 27.1). The deformed material then seeks to relieve its stressed condition by flowing into the space above the tool as the tool advances. Workpiece section 1 is displaced by a small amount relative to section 2 along specific planes by a mechanism called plastic deformation.
