RF and Digital Signal Processing for Software-Defined Radio: A Multi-Standard Multi-Mode Approach

Chapter 6: Transceiver System Analysis and Design Parameters

Thus far, Chapters 4 and 5 have discussed important system design parameters and analysis pertinent to sensitivity and system linearity. It was shown how a system's noise figure and second and third order input intercept points are dependent on the linearity, noise figure, and gain of the individual blocks. Analysis and design tools were provided to evaluate the performance. This chapter presents a continuation of the previous two chapters. In Section 6.1, we discuss the selectivity of the receiver that is its ability to reject unwanted signals such as blocker and other types of interferers. The contribution due to phase noise and spurs is also discussed. Another major set of design parameter that are of great concern to the system performance are the various parameters that define its dynamic range. The 1-dB compression dynamic range, the desensitization dynamic range, the spur-free dynamic range, and the dynamic range obtained through the noise power ratio are all presented in Section 6.2. AM/AM and AM/PM distortions presented in the context of memoryless systems are studied in Section 6.3. Frequency bands, accuracy, and tuning are briefly discussed in Section 6.5. Modulation accuracy and EVM due to various anomalies such as IQ imbalance and DC offsets, for example, are presented in Section 6.5. Adjacent channel power ratio and transmitter broadband noise are considered in Sections 6.6 and 6.7, respectively.

6.1 Receiver Selectivity

Selectivity is the ability of the receiver to reject unwanted signals, mostly in the adjacent and alternate channels, thus allowing proper demodulation of...
