  • TIG welding aluminum turning black and blobbing
Re: TIG welding aluminum turning black and blobbing Black soot and porosity, couldn't those be symptoms of a gas problem?
  • TIG welding aluminum turning black and blobbing
TIG welding aluminum turning black and blobbing Shortly after initiating the arc, the joint that I am trying to weld turns black with soot .
  • black smoke on alu weld
What causes the soot is the aluminum and magnesium alloys combine to form these black oxides. these oxides have a lower boiling point then the temperature of the arc, they evaporate and condense on the weld and haz area. Along the same lines, first time I did some automated TIG with 100% helium on 304 stainless …
  • troubleshooting MIGed aluminum
experienced aluminum TIG welder having difficulty with attempting first time aluminum MIG welding (pushed wire; no spoolgun). setup is Millermatic 250x with U-drive rolls, M25 gun w/Teflon liner. It has black soot and pops and the wire blows back and lodges in the contact tip.

  • CR4 - Thread: Repairing a Leak in an Aluminum Canoe
The algae will burn off when you start to weld on the rivet, displace the shielding gas and cause the aluminum to be contaminated with porosity(small pinholes) Most of the times after the first weld attempt the porosity usually creates a … … with acetone and on the first weld pass try to seal them by TIG welding and be … You will probably get a nasty looking little weld covered with black soot and porosity and probably not seal the leak on this try but this is OK because hopefully you will burn out the algae on this first attempt.
  • DC GTAW for Aluminum?
So how difficult is it to get REALLY good aluminum GTAW welds ? … might be essentially giving me his Maxstar 200DX, and since I cant justify two similiar TIG systems... and DC- works fine for alum.. if you clean the alum first, the bead will be just like an AC bead(but with more penetration) only it will have a black soot over it. if you do it right you should be …
  • Need help with Mig Spoolgun on Aluminum
I've only welded aluminum with my tig (Syncrowave200) and thought I'd be better off using my Thermal Arc Fabricator 281 and spoolgun, because of the thickness of the material. First of all, this thing spatters and sparks like armagedon and then my weld (if that's what you can call it) is covered in black soot .
  • Nuther TIG question
Never TIG though. I didn't see or read any mention as to the temp or color of the tungsten while welding aluminum in my books. I was burnishing the surface of my materials with black corona soot .
