Operating Procedure No. 8 Storage, Housekeeping and Drainage
1. Purpose and Scope
This procedure requires that proper oil/diesel storage facilities are provided, that a good standard of site cleanliness and tidiness is maintained, that a drainage plan is available at all times, and that correct action to prevent pollution is taken in case of spillage.
2. Responsibility
The Engineer (OR Environmental Manager OR ......) shall be responsible for providing proper oil/diesel storage facilities, for keeping an up-to-date drainage plan and drain marking.
All staff are responsible for maintaining a good standard of housekeeping.
All staff shall immediately deal with spillages to prevent pollution.
The Environmental Manager, or any other Director or Manager, shall be responsible for communicating with the Environment Agency in case of an emergency.
The Engineer (OR ......) shall be responsible for the maintenance of the interceptor.
3. Oil Storage
3.1 Storage Tanks
Storage tanks shall either have double skins or be contained within a bund with a capacity not less than 110% of the capacity of the largest tank in the bund. Bunds must be impermeable to water and oil. The whole installation shall be covered to prevent accumulation of rain water.
If there is an accumulation of liquid in the bund, it shall be pumped out and disposed of as special waste.
Bunds shall be inspected at least annually (OR ......) to prove their integrity.
