Operating Procedure No. 5 Furnace Operations

(Author's note: this procedure is included to show that starting up (or shutting down) a process is a time when there is a greater risk of an environmental incident than when the process is operating normally.)

1. Purpose and Scope

This procedure ensures that furnace operations at start up, normal operations and shut down are controlled and satisfy the consent conditions laid down by the Environment Agency under the Pollution Prevention and Control Act 1999.

2. Responsibility

Furnace operators are responsible for operating the furnace correctly in accordance with this procedure.

3. Consent Conditions

  1. Only non-chlorinated residues shall be processed.

  2. Residence of gaseous products of combustion in after burner zone 2 seconds minimum at 850 C minimum.

  3. Adequate oxygen for complete combustion.

  4. Induced turbulence to prevent cold spots.

  5. Emissions per m 3 not to exceed: particulates 50 mg; CO 100 mg; HCl 30 mg; SO 2 30 mg; metals 4 mg.

  6. Gas velocity up stack 15 metres per second minimum.

4. Operations

4.1 Start-Up

The conveyor shall be empty before the furnace is lit.

The normal burners shall be lit in the pre-heat and combustion zones.

When the furnace temperature in the combustion zone reaches 750 C, the after burners shall be lit and the fan switched on.

When the temperature in the after burner zone reaches 860 C and has held for five minutes, drums shall be fed onto the conveyor. Feed...
