A deformed flexible coupling element can provide useful evidence of excessive loading. Examining the damage alongside the operating conditions can help establish why it failed—and whether an identical replacement is appropriate.

In the example shown, the elastomer element's originally circular central opening has developed a square profile. Compression of the spider legs has displaced material towards the centre, leaving visible evidence of the loading experienced.

Before selecting a replacement, investigate:

» Starting conditions, shock loads and duty cycle.
» Alignment and torsional behaviour.

A harder elastomer may be appropriate in some applications, but changing hardness also changes the coupling's characteristics. Selection should follow an assessment of the drive.
