Diesel-to-Electric: Retaining the Driveline

Replacing a diesel engine with an electric motor can require a new mechanical interface to the existing equipment. In one retrofit, jbj Techniques connected a 250 kW electric motor to an existing SAE clutch arrangement.
The customer also needed to preserve the option of returning to diesel power if operating requirements changed.
jbj designed and manufactured an 800 mm diameter cast iron bellhousing and a custom coupling arrangement, converting the electric motor shaft to the required SAE 14 flange configuration.
The project brought together several considerations:
» Compatibility with the existing clutch and driven equipment.
» Motor mounting and available installation space.
» Alignment and torsional characteristics.
» Future servicing and operational flexibility.
Application engineering and in-house machining allowed the mechanical connection to be designed around these requirements.
