Multi-Spindle Screwdrivers Double Assembly Output
A machine builder was tasked with doubling throughput on an existing power tool manufacturer’s assembly fastening process. The entire operation was being done manually, with the operator placing both parts into a fixture.

They drove each screw sequentially in a star pattern, and then came back to “rehit” attempting to maintain consistent torque for all. This was eating up valuable cycle time, and with the new productivity targets, this bottleneck became high priority.

In a twist, the quality department wanted to take this upgrade opportunity to pre-emptively address the theoretical potential for inconsistent joint clamping forces with the current method. Visumatic suggested independently driving all four screws simultaneously, so that the cone can be smoothly drawn into the housing, improving joint integrity.

The new method applied has feeders deliver screws to each of the four VPD Power Driver spindles, simultaneously advance them, and with independant suspension the screwdriver controllers install each screw to the proper target torque and angle, discretely logging each value. This approach resulted in a more balanced joining process and a greater assurance of excellent end-product durability.

“Out of all the FATs we’ve have been a part of, this was the most efficient, helpful, and thoroughly documented. Visumatic answered all of the questions we didn’t even know we had to ask!” ~ Machine Builder Project Lead

Improved quality protocols along with straightforward integration conferred the confidence that they will rapidly deploy this technology, beating install deadlines and exceeding production rate requirements.
