Filament Strapping and Filament Tapes
Description
Filament strapping and filament tapes are strong adhesive tapes reinforced with filaments, typically made of fiberglass. These tapes are designed to provide high tensile strength and durability, making them suitable for securing and bundling items. They are available on a cardboard roll and are used with a plastic holder that includes a serrated metal cutter for easy application.
Working Principle
Filament tapes work by embedding thousands of individual filaments into the adhesive on the tape's backing. These filaments, often made of fiberglass, are woven into yarns that provide exceptional strength and resistance to tearing. This construction allows the tape to withstand significant stress and pressure, making it ideal for holding heavy loads together. The embedded filaments prevent the tape from being torn laterally, which enhances its durability and reliability.
Applications
Filament tapes are commonly used in palletizing and bundling heavy loads due to their high tensile strength. They are also employed in moving furniture with movable parts, such as plastic trays in refrigerators, to prevent damage during transit. Additionally, polyester-reinforced filament tapes are used in specialty applications like vapor seals and securing office furniture.
Advantages over other Strapping and Filament Tapes
Filament tapes offer superior strength compared to twine or glue closures and are an economical alternative to plastic or metal strapping. They are highly resistant to tears, scuffing, abrasion, and nicks, making them more durable than many other types of strapping. Bi-directional filament tapes are particularly advantageous as they are split-resistant, unlike mono-directional tapes.
Limitations
One limitation of filament tapes is that they require a cutting device to remove from the roll due to their inability to be torn laterally. This can add an extra step in the application process. Additionally, while they are strong, they may not be suitable for all types of surfaces or conditions, particularly those that require flexibility or conformability.
Considerations
When considering filament tapes, it's important to evaluate the initial costs and operating expenses, as they can vary depending on the grade and type of adhesive used.
