Appendix B: Sample Resilient IT Architecture Target Definition Document (XYZ Insurance Corporation)

Overview

In this, the third phase of the Resilient IT Architecture Project, a target definition document, has been produced. It presents the XYZ Insurance Corporation s (XYZ) target IT architecture. This architecture was created by:

  • Reviewing the baseline assessment of the de facto IT architecture

  • Determining potential responses to the shortcomings of the de facto IT architecture

  • Developing architectural models that represent those responses

  • Completing a series of templates that further detail the architectural models and show the integration and interdependences among them

The target architecture is presented across four dimensions, including an operations view, an information view, an applications view, and an information technology view (see Figure B.1).

These four views (or models) are tied together in this document to ensure that the department has a solid foundation on which to build as it evolves toward its vision for the future.

More About Architecture

The four views of RITA can be thought of as being analogous to the detailed architectural blueprints and specifications for the subassemblies of a building. For example,

  • A site plan is like an operations view.

  • A floor plan is like an information view.

  • An electrical plan is like an application view.

  • A plumbing plan is like a technology view.
