The Best Practices Enterprise: A Guide to Achieving Sustainable World-Class Performance

In January 2006, XYZ Insurance Corporation (XYZ, resulting from a merger of X Incorporated with YZ Company) embarked upon a continuous employee improvement (CEI) initiative as defined in the program-centric strategic plan for the company. The management team decided to use Kerr Consulting Group s (KCG) proprietary Strategic Planning Methodology (as depicted in Figure D.1) to drive the strategic planning initiative. The XYZ planning committee recognized that a carefully crafted strategy was important to ensure success in the dynamic global market in which the company competes.
Now, with the new strategic plan in place, it is important to begin implementation of the various Best Practices programs identified within it.
The CEI project is one of the first program implementations that the firm has embarked upon. The CEI project team has developed a baseline characterization document that reflects where XYZ is currently in regard to the people, processes, and technology that make up the business. The work delivered in this document will help to inform the training and development and performance measurement elements of the CEI program by defining the strengths and weaknesses of XYZ.
The team used a workshop approach in developing its baseline characterization. A workshop prep package was prepared and distributed to attendees through XYZ s operating committee.
