Data Warehousing: Using the Wal-Mart Model

This chapter provides a retailer with the basic analysesthat need to be built for the store operations side of thebusiness. Many of the analyses for one group will applyto another group. For example, the basic sales figuresused by store operations are important to marketingduring a promotion. The basic premise of a data warehouse is that detaileddata is available to the entire business. Below I have outlined thebasic areas in which store operations could benefit from a data warehouseapplication. Each application has a small overview, a data elementlisting, and a sample report.
It is best to use this chapter as a reference for discussion. The samplereports presented here should be used to clarify and to help in the creationof your custom data warehouse. Please take into considerationthat some of the analyses build off of one or more similar analyses. Aneffort has been made to point out these other analyses. As a generalrule, the analyses at the beginning of this chapter are simple and getmore complex toward the end of the chapter. Instead of repeating dataelements for every analysis, they are sometimes referenced to a differentsection of this chapter. For example, the data elements of a store canbe used for almost every type of analysis; these elements are listed onceand then referenced thereafter. I have also included a data model skeletonin Appendix B for further data element references.
