Basic Article Pos Analysis
This analysis will provide the merchant with the basics to better understand article movement. This analysis is limited to asingle article. The selling performance of that article is studied viathe standard organizationalhierarchy (company, region, district, etc.) within the company. This is the building block for other, more complex analyses. Thisfundamental analysis requires the use of point-of-sale (POS) data. Other data, such as receipts and inventory, is valuable but notrequired for the first implementation of a data warehouse. The idea is to get a snapshot of the article performance over time interms of units sold, dollars sold, gross margin, sell-through, and the like. The analysis can be output as both a tabular reportand in graphical form. The tabular report will show some of the basic retail measurements, whereas the graph will show the trends.Used together, they become a very powerful management tool for inventory.
Basic Article POS Data Elements
Along with the following data elements, the store hierarchies (as defined in "Store Sales" in the previouschapter) will be used for this analysis. There are several sales tables defined here. Not all need to be defined and created. Thedata usually exists in some form within every retail operation. However, some retailers will not have some of this data. Storetransaction, store transaction merchandise, and store transaction tender data elements were defined in Chapter 10 and are not repeated here, but are the basis for these sales summaries.
