Setting the Onsite Tone

Once the assessment team has arrived to conduct the onsite phase, the assessment team and the customer representative will work to establish and maintain a positive tone for the entire assessment process. This starts with the opening meeting and continues until the assessment team departs the site. Figure 7.2 shows the estimated timeline for the onsite phase.

Understanding the Opening Meeting (The Inbriefing)

Starting the onsite phase on a positive note is extremely important. The opening meeting, also called the inbriefing, is the first opportunity to set a positive tone; it should be utilized to bring everyone together for a common purpose.

Defining objectives for the onsite phase opening meeting is an important cornerstone for the entire effort. It sets the tone and helps educate the participants about the process that will be occurring over the assessment period. The opening meeting also helps show the entire group the benefits of conducting an organizational type of assessment such as the IAM. The opening meeting is a good opportunity to lay out the remainder of the assessment process and outline what the customer should expect during the onsite phase. A good road map always helps people understand processes and expectations.
