Chat Room Client/Server (CS)

Chat Room

Level: 1

Definition: A virtual room or place on a computer network where users can log in at the same time and participate in real-time text-based conversations. The software used by chat rooms typically splits the screen into two sections: one devoted to the ongoing discussion and one where the individual user can compose his or her contribution to the conversation before sending it. Once the message is ready, the user simply clicks on a Send or Submit button that transmits the message to a location where it can be viewed by anyone logged into that chat room at that time. Checksum

Level: 2

Definition: A numeric value used to verify the integrity of a block of data, a checksum is used when data are being stored, retrieved, or transmitted. The checksum value is sent along with the data when they are transmitted. The receiving system computes a new checksum based on the received data and compares this value with the one sent with the original. If the two values are the same, the receiver has a high degree of confidence that the data was received correctly. (See also Error Correction.)
