7.1 Troubleshooting

As with any file system, your AdvFS is bound to have problems from time to time. Although AdvFS tends to be quite robust, no file system can fully protect you in case of a hardware failure or a malicious system user. Your skills and knowledge will be tested the most at those times. Thus, troubleshooting is one of the most important and most difficult tasks you will perform as a Tru64 UNIX administrator.

In previous sections, we simply provided hints of some of the vital concepts we discuss here. Now, the time has come to cover these topics in greater depth. By understanding these concepts, you will gain the knowledge you need to tackle tough issues when they occur. We begin with an in-depth discussion of file tags.

7.1.1 File Tags

Up to this point we've touched a bit on file tags, but we haven't really explored them in any depth. In this section, we provide a detailed explanation of a file's tag and how this knowledge can be used to gather additional helpful information about an AdvFS using some of the Advanced Utilities. Although we cover the concepts here, we explore these utilities in greater detail in Appendix B.
