Glossary

Access control list: An object that is associated with a file and that contains entries specifying the access that individual users or groups of users have to the file.
ACL: See Access control list.
Adapter: A device that converts the protocol and hardware interface of one bus type to that of another without changing the functionality of the bus.
Advanced file system: One of the supported file systems in Tru64 UNIX.
AdvFS: See Advanced file system.
AdvFS Volume: See Virtual disk.
Alpha microprocessor: A powerful 64-bit microprocessor developed in the early 1990s by Digital Equipment Corp. It is the primary processor family supported by Tru64 UNIX, as well as by Open VMS and Linux.
Bad block replacement: The procedure used to locate a replacement block, mark the bad block as replaced, and move the data from the bad block to the replacement block. Most modern disk drives can perform this function with no assistance from the operating system. The disk may or may not report that it has done so.
BAS: See Bitfile access system.
BBR: See Bad block replacement.
Bitfile: An AdvFS structure that consists of an array of eight-kilobyte pages, named via a tag. In the BAS layer a bitfile and a file are synonymous.
Bitfile access system: The lowest layer in the AdvFS internal structure. The BAS is concerned primarily with bitfile manipulations, buffer cache management, domain and volume management, transaction and log management, and storage placement and management.
