Understanding Mobile Human-Computer Interaction

Chapter 7: Research Guidelines for Projects

INTRODUCTION

This chapter focuses on providing you with guidelines for starting your own mobile HCI project. Specifically, this chapter provides you with information on how to get started on a literature search; how to get focused on your aims and objectives; tips on project management; and how to choose the appropriate methods for your study. In addition, it provides you with information on how to write up your mobile HCI project.

CHOOSING A TOPIC FOR STUDY

When it comes to undertaking your research study you may be given a specific topic to research but most of the time you will probably be expected to come up with your own idea for a research topic. The key thing to remember from the outset is that when it comes to choosing a topic for study, it's important that you make an informed decision.

How can you go about this? There are a number of ways. In the first instance, you may think back to your lectures (if you can remember any of them) and think about something interesting that was covered in a lecture (again this could be problematic). Next, follow-up the references related to the topic, if any were given at the end of the lecture. You could even make an appointment to see the lecturer to discuss your research ideas in more detail. In which case, it might help if you write some ideas down on paper before your appointment so that you can use your meeting effectively.
