Chapter 9: Planning Your VPN
Overview
There's an old adage that says, "If you fail to plan then plan to fail." This is as true for putting together a VPN as it is for any other information system. If your VPN is not well thought out, you could see all those projected savings and efficiencies evaporate. You'll have spent a lot of time and money and you'll be left with something that doesn't do what you really need done or that doesn't work at all.
There is no way that we can design your VPN for you. The possibilities are endless, depending on the size of your organization, the geography of it, the technical skills you have to draw on, and?not least of all?what you want to do with your VPN. Then there's the fact that the technology is changing so rapidly that anything we describe now might be obsolete by the time you're reading this. However, there are certain logical steps to take when planning a VPN.
