9.10 Define a Pilot Project
Once you have settled on a product, an architecture, and a vendor or provider, don't plan on rolling out your VPN in one mighty wave. Set up a pilot project that does not replace or interfere with any existing systems. Keep it small and secure so you can test your concepts and the products you are considering without endangering any of your real data or systems.
Begin by testing the pilot thoroughly with your own IT staff before you infict it upon other users. After you're satisfied that it works for you, test the concept thoroughly with a small, representative group of users. Do it in a way that will not interfere with their usual operations any more than necessary. Provide sufficient time for evaluation and stabilization before going "live."
