Knowledge Cities: Approaches, Experiences, and Perspectives

Over the past twenty years, there has been intensive discussions about the importance of knowledge management (KM) in the business world. Nowadays, knowledge is considered one of the most valuable assets of an enterprise, which has to be managed efficiently and effectively in order to gain a competitive advantage in the knowledge economy era (Ergazakis et al., 2004a).
Knowledge management has evolved into a strategic management approach, finding application not only in the business world but also in other areas such as education, government, and healthcare. The fact that major international organizations such as the European Commission, the World Bank, the United Nations Organization and the OECD have adopted KM frameworks in their strategic directions regarding global development clearly indicates that a new link exists between knowledge management and knowledge-based development (Carrillo, 2002, 2004; Metaxiotis and Psarras, 2004a,b).
