Mobile Broadband Multimedia Networks: Techniques, Models and Tools for 4G

Chapter 2: Transmission Techniques

Alister Burr Emmanuel Jaffrot Eduardo Rodrigues de Lima Werner Teich

2.1 Introduction

In this chapter and the next, we consider transmission techniques (this chapter) and signal processing (Chapter 3) for wireless mobile communication systems: that is for the most part techniques employed on the physical layer of the OSI model, both at transmitter and receiver, and including both the air interface itself and the signal processing algorithms required to transmit and detect them. Thus, it covers link level aspects (not to be confused with the link layer of the OSI model), including the design and evaluation of techniques used on individual links of a wireless network, although multiuser systems and multi-user detection are also covered. These techniques depend on the characteristics of the radio channel, as described in Chapter 4, antennas and diversity (Chapter 5), and both support and are influenced by the system level evaluation of complete wireless networks, as described in Chapters 8 and 9.

Chapter 7 MIMO Systems of course includes much work on transmission techniques and signal processing specifically for MIMO and space-time systems. Nevertheless, this chapter also includes work on signal processing for MIMO systems, since increasingly MIMO is being seen as an essential element of wireless systems. However, the emphasis here is on the systems and transmission techniques, rather than the MIMO aspects: Chapter 7 places the work on MIMO transmission in the context of space-time channels, which are discussed in Chapter 6.

The two chapters between them describe primarily work carried out in...
