Mobile Broadband Multimedia Networks: Techniques, Models and Tools for 4G

The radio network aspects that have been considered in COST 273 are mainly related to radio network planning, radio resource management, and the design and evaluation of techniques for radio network optimisation. The main focus was on infrastructure-based networks, and in particular cellular systems like UMTS. However, the application of such techniques was also considered for Wireless LANs (WLANs), Wireless Personal Area Networks (WPANs), and infrastructure-less environments. The aspects related to terminal location identification were also investigated. In this field, several good and well-known books are published over the literature. Therefore, the two chapters dedicated to such issues here are focused specifically on the most advanced results obtained in COST 273, with no reference to the basic and more introductory aspects related to the air interface techniques investigated. The next chapter deals with the research results related to UMTS.
This chapter treats topics that are not strictly UMTS oriented and is organised in four parts. The first part (Section 8.2) is dedicated to MORANS, an initiative aimed at harmonising the tools used by several research groups participating in COST 273, to study the performance of radio cellular networks with particular regards to UMTS. This harmonisation was achieved through the definition of common Reference Scenarios, which allowed the comparability of results among groups.
