Mobile Broadband Multimedia Networks: Techniques, Models and Tools for 4G

Chapter 3: Signal Processing

Alister Burr Tomaz Javornik Tadashi Matsumoto Jan Sykora, Laurent Clavier, and Geir E. ien

3.1 Introduction

While the previous chapter focused on specific wireless standards and air interfaces, this chapter now moves to more generic signal processing techniques that may be used in various systems. Again, the focus is link level aspects, including also multi-user systems and multi-user detection, and again it is primarily the work of WG1 that is reported.

Thus Section 3.2 covers modulation and coding techniques used for data transmission; Section 3.3 covers equalisation techniques used at the receiver to overcome signal dispersion, as well as some more general issues of signal detection; Section 3.4 covers issues of parameter estimation, which includes carrier phase and symbol timing recovery as well as channel estimation more generally. Section 3.5 covers multi-user detection, which of course overlaps with CDMA systems, as described in Section 2.3, but here the emphasis is on the detection techniques rather than the systems, and their application may in fact be broader than CDMA. Finally Section 3.6 considers adaptive air interfaces, and especially the link adaptation algorithms employed.

Two topics have been recurrent features of the work of WG1, described in this chapter. One has been techniques for MIMO systems, and although a large part of this appears in Chapter 7, signal processing techniques for MIMO remain an important part of this chapter, since increasingly MIMO is being seen as an essential element of wireless systems. However, in this chapter the focus is on the signal processing...
