Overview
Automating FileMaker Pro is not just about writing scripts. It includes all of the features that let you skip manual data entry and operations. An important part of that functionality consists of calculation fields and formulas. This part of the book addresses those issues.
This chapter provides an overview of calculations and formulas. In the next chapter, you will find an in-depth look at the functions that are unique to FileMaker Pro. (Common functions such as addition and cosines are beyond the scope of this book.) In Chapter 9, the FileMaker Pro field options and validation rules are presented; these, too, automate the data entry process. Chapter 10 looks at the other end of the process from data entry: summarization of data once it has been entered. By properly setting up summaries, you can have FileMaker Pro automatically compute everything you need for reports, invoices, and other documents. Finally, in Chapter 11, you will find a summary of this part of the book that helps you determine which features are appropriate to use in which cases.
