Cellular Communications Explained From Basics to 3G

Glossary

A

1X RTT
The abbreviation used to describe the first phase of CDMA2000 that uses a single 1.25-MHz bandwidth RF carrier channel. The abbreviation RTT stands for Radio Transmission Technology spreading, and the 1X element indicates that it uses the spreading required for one 1.25-MHz channel.
3GPP
Third Generation Partnership Programme. The standards body and organization used to develop and coordinate W-CDMA/UMTS development.
3GPP2
Third Generation Partnership Programme 2. The standards body and organization used to coordinate the development of CDMA2000 in the USA.
3X RTT
The version of CDMA2000 that will be capable of higher data rates than 1X systems. It uses a spreading rate of three times the basic 1X technology. RTT stands for Radio Transmission Technology.

A

ACELP
Algebraic Code Excited Linear Prediction. A vocoder technique used in GSM and NA-TDMA.
ADPCM
Adaptive Differential Pulse Code Modulation. A form of speech coding widely used for wireless local loop networks and cordless phones employing a 32-kbps data rate.
Air interface
The interface between the mobile phone and the base station. Often this refers to the protocols used in this area.
AM
Amplitude Modulation. A form of modulation used widely on the long-, medium- and short-wave broadcast bands. It involves changing the amplitude of the signal in line with the instantaneous amplitude of the incoming audio or modulating signal.
AMPS
Advanced Mobile Phone System. The analogue first-generation mobile phone system used extensively in North America and many other countries.
