Chapter 12: SmartUpdate

Introduction

You have deployed 4 enforcement points, 2 management servers, 100 client VPN connections; Check Point produces a new feature pack. You have a business requirement to upgrade all of your software as quickly as possible. Most security engineers will groan and shake their heads another massive undertaking to perform a simple upgrade. Check Point has created the SmartUpdate Client for this reason. SmartUpdate is the tool that you will use to perform product updates and to push licenses to products.

Since the advent of NG, licensing has significantly changed. Licenses in 4. x were always local with the license files always installed directly on the Check Point product platform. With the new method of licensing, you can install all of your licenses on the management server and push the licenses to all Check Point products. This method of licensing provides a new level of flexibility. If you have a remote enforcement point in Chicago, and the office moves to New York, you can remove the license from the Chicago firewall and redeploy the license to New York, all from your central management server. Central management of your licenses will ensure that you have control over the deployment of your firewall products.
