Microsoft Exchange Server 2003, Deployment and Migration

Chapter 5: Public Folder Interoperability and Migration

5.1 Introduction

Even with Exchange 5.5, understanding and controlling Public Folder replication was always more of an art than a science. The landscape is more complicated with the advent of Exchange 2003 (specifically Exchange 2000) because mixed environments need to consider interoperability of Exchange 5.5 and Exchange 2003 Public Folder replication and ultimately the migration of Exchange 5.5 Public Folders to Exchange 2003.

There's no concept of a mixed-mode environment for Exchange 2000 and Exchange 2003. In such an environment, interoperability of Public Folders is simply identical to Public Folder implementation within a native Exchange 2000 organization or a native Exchange 2003 organization. In these cases, migrating Public Folder content from a server in an Exchange 2000 environment to a server in an Exchange 2003 environment is a matter of simply replicating the Public Folder content and rehoming the Public Folder. More or less the same holds true for an Exchange 5.5 environment, with the single added complication of dealing with replication of Public Folder e-mail addresses. The majority of this chapter discusses that particular interoperability requirement.

This chapter explains some of the core aspects of Public Folders in a mixed Exchange 5.5 environment, covering topics that will include Public Folder CAs, Public Folder Hierarchy replication, and permissions interoperability with groups and distribution lists.
