Microsoft Exchange Server 2003, Deployment and Migration

Exchange 2000 to Exchange 2003 migration is a relatively straightforward process and certainly nowhere near as complicated as the migration from Exchange 5.5 to either Exchange 2000 or Exchange 2003. Moving from Exchange 2000 to Exchange 2003 can be achieved in one of two ways: either (1) by performing an in-place upgrade on the Exchange 2000 server or (2) by installing a new Exchange 2003 server in the same Administrative Group as the Exchange 2000 server and using the Move Mailbox Wizard to move mailboxes onto the new platform. This chapter describes the various processes in some degree of detail, but ultimately the approach that you take is determined by the complexity of your environment and other factors, such as available resources and budget.
One of the most important details to bear in mind about Exchange 2000 is that it is not supported on a Windows 2003 server. However, do note that Exchange 2000 is supported running on a Windows 2000 member server in a Windows 2003 DC environment. The corollary to this is that Exchange 2003 is supported on a Windows 2000 platform so long as that platform is running Windows 2000 Service Pack 3 or higher and either Windows 2003 DCs or Windows 2000 Service Pack 3 DCs are available. This dependency mandates a particular in-place upgrade strategy for Exchange 2000 to Exchange 2003 migration.
There are essentially two approaches you can take: either (1) perform an...
