TABLE OF CONTENTS Product entity requirements for inclusion in a performance or Part I specification are defined for items as a prerequisite to the design of the item and are written for the specific purpose of constraining the solution space such that it is assured that the item designed in accordance with them will function in a synergistic way with respect to other items in a system to achieve the system function, purpose, or need. The structure of a performance specification may follow any one of several formats, but a very well established and effective format, recognized by the Department of Defense (DoD), entails six sections. The requirements for an item in this format are documented in Section 3, titled "Requirements." Section 4 should define verification requirements for all of the item requirements defined in Section 3 and give the method of verification.
Qualification verification requirements define the essential characteristics of the verification plans and procedures necessary to produce truthful evidence about whether or not the item requirements have been fully complied with in the design. So, verification requirements do not apply to the product but rather to the process of proving that its design satisfies the content of Section 3. For each requirement in the requirements section (Section 3 of a DoD specification), we should find one or more verification requirements in Section 4 (DoD).
