System Verification: Proving the Design Solution Satisfies the Requirements

Chapter 2.6: Item Qualification Verification Reporting

2.6.1 CLOSING THE LOOP

The final step in the system development process is establishing that the product design solution does in fact satisfy the requirements driving the design process. This proof process requires evidence that can be assessed by qualified engineers and managers who would make that judgment. The evidence is in the form of technical reports that provide the results of the qualification verification tasks accomplished. These reports may include only the factual evidence or also include an assessment of that evidence leading to a conclusion. In the former case, that assessment should be documented by some other means such as a memo referencing the report assessed. The report and its possibly separate assessment together provide the input to an audit process conducted by management people possibly supported by engineering talent. The audit process is covered in the following chapter. In this chapter, we will focus on the reporting and report assessment process that will yield evidence for the audit. In this chapter we discuss the documenting of the qualification results, the first of the three verification classes to take place (the others being acceptance and system test and evaluation). In later chapters we will deal with the other two, but the story is very similar.

2.6.2 ENGINEERING ETHICS

There are three stages in the capture of verification evidence: (1) the raw data, (2) evaluation of that data, and (3) a conclusion drawn from that evaluation. This book encourages that all three be included in the verification report. The...
