TABLE OF CONTENTS The chapters so far have discussed what decisions are, how to describe them, the need for transferring the decision process in design, and what to transfer. This chapter shows how the design decision processes went with the following design samples.
Hydraulic cylinder: We start from one of the most common machine elements, a regular hydraulic cylinder, and show how the designer decides its structure. We then go up to a higher level of concept and review the design.
Torque sensor: One of the basic elements for an intelligent machine is the force sensor. This example starts from the functional requirement for setting the mechanism and structure. It shows the effect of computer support by using a 3D CAD tool by showing how deformation and stress change and the designer changes the design parameters.
Positioning table: This example explains the positioning device which is the most fundamental element for machine tools, measurement machines and test machines.
Intelligent grinding tool for producing flat wafer surfaces: The grinding force reaction tilts the grinding wheel and interferes with producing a perfectly flat surface on large wafers. This sample shows a grinding tool that tilts its spindle axis and table, in response to the grinding force, to finish a perfectly flat surface on a wafer. This subsection shows the mind process in building this system.
