Management Extra: Quality and Operations Management

So far in this book, we have focused on quality from the perspective of the customer and on how operations management techniques can help organisations to deliver quality products and services.
Health and safety and quality are two sides of the same coin.
Health and Safety Executive (1993)
There is an ever-growing awareness in organisations that quality management is broader than this and also involves being health and safety conscious and environmentally friendly. This brief section looks at the application of quality concepts to health, safety and the environment and signposts you to sources of further information.
You will:
Assess how a quality approach can improve health, safety and environmental practices
Identify ways of improving your health, safety and environmental culture.
The Good Neighbour Scheme invites you to share your health and safety expertise. Your contractors and suppliers, neighbouring firms and local schools could benefit from your knowledge and skills. The Scheme is about playing your part in the supply chain, and the local community.
But it also makes sound business sense. You probably work with others, as a client, contractor, subcontractor or supplier. Health and safety management is integral to the successful completion of a contract, or to the delivery of goods on time and to the required quality standards. One accident with one employer will have knock-on effects on others in the chain by disrupting supply or services.
