What Business Really Wants from IT: A Collaborative Guide for Business Directors and CIOs

The fundamental change required here is one of mindsets. IT people s mindsets change from seeing their raison d tre as moving from I m in IT , to I m in business. I bring a particular perspective to everything that my business does, and this perspective can change everything we do in the organization.
And business people s mindsets change from believing that IT is still the old data processing department, to a mindset which requires IT people to deliver business results, in business terms and communicating in business language. This sounds a little one-sided in that business gets to make all the demands and IT gets to do all the work. But a true business mindset change understands that IT people come with a certain history and technological background and that some partnering and mentoring will be required.
I have seen that the most profound change is the mental model that people use to see everything. Firstly priorities change, where delivering IT loses its all-encompassing central place in the minds of IT people. IT people try to see everything through the three lenses of maintaining business momentum through the effective and efficient operation of IT, of improving business results by focusing on business outcomes, and of providing real leadership by generating new ideas and information which creates new products, markets and real competencies.
