Chapter 13: Becoming Your Own HR Strategy Consultant

Introduction

This final chapter looks at how you can develop as an HR strategy consultant, which draws together many of the process threads of this book.

Learning to think strategically is just one of the qualifying steps to becoming your own strategy consultant in the round. In addition to being able to understand, diagnose and resolve key strategic issues effectively, you will also need to be able to accomplish the more difficult task of carrying others within the organization with that thinking. Paradoxically, this can sometimes mean holding back from advancing your own strategic thinking too far otherwise it may take too long for others to catch up. Also, there is a very real risk that you might close your mind off to thoughts and perceptions that may come from others.

In addition, your mind-set might be one of the Holy Grail strategy that there is one single right and best strategy in any given business context. Usually there is more than one good strategy and even where there is only one, there is invariably more than one way of implementing it.

In the final analysis, the process of strategy is more important than its actual content. If you are prepared to work hard to get the process right, then the content (and in particular the outputs) of strategic thinking will largely look after itself.
