Controlled Growth of Nanomaterials

One-dimensional nanoarrays are usually synthesized by means of a porous template. Main porous templates have two kinds: the track-etch polymer template15 and the ordered channel AAM template (the alumina membrane templates). The preparation process of the track-etch polymer template is as follows. After the polyster or polycarbonate plates with the thickness of 6 to 20 m were irradiated by nuclei, many concave damage hotels were left on the plates. Then, these plates were treated by chemical etch, so that these concave holes become cylindric pores with uniform diameters, which were random distributed. For these polymer templates, the smallest pore diameter may reach 10 nm and the pore density is about 10 9/cm -2. The cylindric pores are not perpendicular to the surface of the plate. However, the alumina membrane template has the following features: the channel distribution is uniform, ordered and hexagonally close-packed, and the channels are parallel to each other and perpendicular to the surface. Therefore, the ordered nanoarrays of one-dimensional nanowires and nanotubes can be synthesized be means of the alumina templates.
In Sec. 5.2, we mainly introduce the synthesis and characterizations of ordered nanoarrays based on the AAM templates, and also introduce a few synthesis experiments of ordered nanoarrays based on other templates.
The elemental ordered nanoarrays can be synthesized by alumina templates using many synthesis methods. Usually, the ordered nanoarrays of metals and semi-metals may be prepared by using electrochemical deposition of...
