Chapter 7: Hong Kong and Shanghai Two Modern Cities
China has many interesting cities. Beijing and Xi'an come to mind. I have singled out Hong Kong and Shanghai for discussion in this chapter in order to emphasize their current dynamic growth, while cities like Beijing and Xi'an are distinguished mainly by their past history. Beijing and Xi'an will be discussed in Chapter 8 as possible sites for tourists to visit. In this chapter I take a somewhat comparative or even competitive view to describe these two cities, as some of their residents do. People have ranked cities in the United States by a host of factors. Among them are climate, environmental conditions, transportation facilities, job and career opportunities, the quality of cultural activities, the availability of good restaurants, the school system, etc. According to a certain ranking, Pittsburgh was the most desirable city over all. Here I discuss the distinguishing characteristics of these two cities in comparison with each other and with some other cities.
