Chapter 8: A Country for Tourists

For an understanding of China, I will record some personal experiences from my visits and present my views on a few interesting places. This may also whet the appetite of readers and inspire them to visit China. Readers who have gone to China may enjoy seeing a different perspective of the places they have visited. This chapter is not a tourist guide. Plenty of guidebooks on China are available. A good guide book provides information on good hotels at different price ranges, a list of good restaurants for each kind of food, the means of transportation from one place to another, shops and stores for different consumer goods and so forth that is not available here.

China's Geography a Map of China

In order to identify the locations of the different places mentioned in this chapter a map of China is shown. China is the third largest country in the world, after Russia and Canada, having 9.6 million square kilometers in land area. It is situated in the eastern and southeastern part of Asia, with its coast bordering the Pacific Ocean. It occupies one quarter of the area of Asia and one-fifteenth of the area of the globe. There are many climatic zones, varying from tropical and equatorial in the south to frigid-temperate in the north.
