Defining a world-class machine shop begins with Chapter 1: Traits of a World-Class Machine Shop this chapter attempts to define world-class goals and prepare one for a shop visit. Chapter 2: A 30-Minute Shop Assessment discusses a quasi shop visit. This visit describes a walk-through of a shop with descriptive examples from actual shop tours. Questions that I ask during the visit are covered along with discussion of what the answers tell me. Chapter 3: Selection and Training of Employees is considered of high significance toward meeting world-class goals and is especially important to product quality.
Being a successful supplier requires more than average capabilities in personnel and equipment. Here is an attempt to define the traits and features of an ideal world-class machine shop.
