TABLE OF CONTENTS The detailed design and development activity continues the development effort and makes use of the functional and allocated baselines developed during conceptual design and preliminary design. The detailed design effort takes these definitions of the overall system (functional baseline) and of the major subsystems (allocated baseline) and starts to consider the design of specific subsystem components. The realization and documentation of individual components is referred to as the product baseline.
A number of tasks are undertaken during detailed design and development. The major technical activities include the following:
Describing the lower-level components making up the subsystems, including software products and personnel requirements (and their interrelationships);
Defining the characteristics of these items through specifications and design data;
Finalizing the design of all interfaces necessary to support system integration;
Procuring the above items off-the-shelf or designing them if they are unique to the system under development;
Developing a prototype or engineering model of the final system by integrating these items (for the purpose of system-level test and evaluation);
Redesigning and retesting (as required) aspects of the system prototype that failed to meet the minimum requirements;
Conducting a critical design review (CDR) to ensure that the design is ready for construction and production.
