TABLE OF CONTENTS Process group members should have a solid engineering background. They should have a general knowledge of the organization's application domains and knowledge of modern engineering techniques and methods. They must be up-to-date on accepted engineering standards (DoD, MoD, IEEE, ISO, IEC ESA, NASA, and so forth). They must also have a good understanding of the project management support functions such as quality assurance and Configuration Management. The managers and engineers alike must respect them. They must have a strong knowledge and good experience in project management and a working knowledge of metrics to help the project managers manage and control their projects better.
Process group members must be people oriented with superior communication skills and willing to perform most of their work in the project developers' offices not their own. They should always be ready to provide hand-holding support for the managers and practitioners on the various projects where the process ideas are being introduced.
While process group members must have the technical background to maintain credibility with the product or product component developers, they must also be knowledgeable in the organizational development skills as well (i.e., managing technological change, team building, collaborative consulting) to effect successful technology transition.
While the many tasks attributed to the process group are important ones for its members, it must be stressed that the job of the process group is to be the champion of the process improvement effort. It is expected to facilitate the process...
