Lumped Constant versus Distributed Constant

Up to this point we have been concentrating on electrical networks and on the types of mathematical devices by which we can explain their behavior. A good knowledge and understanding of the characteristics of these networks are of great importance in all phases of electrical work, for they are encountered in every sort of application; furthermore, an insight into their operation often gives us a means of visualizing and interpreting electrical phenomena in other types of circuits, whose characteristics are not so well known.

The circuits with which we have been working have all been of the lumped-constant type; this means that we can point to the individual elements of the network and say, "This is a capacitor, that is an inductor, here is a resistor, and there is a battery." We have considered the quality of each of these various network components to be concentrated, or "lumped,"...
