The Field Equations

We spoke in Chap. 1 of the great work of James Clerk-Maxwell, wherein he formulated the laws which govern the electromagnetic field. We recall that he took the fundamental, though disconnected, laws that had been discovered by Faraday, Amp e, and others and wove them into a set of equations from which these fundamental laws can be derived as special cases but which together can give the answer to such problems as those of radiation and guided waves. Maxwell's equations showed him that it was possible for an electromagnetic wave to exist; to a trained mathematician the very form that these equations take is evidence in itself that the substance being described is capable of wave motion.
