Get up to speed quickly on storage area networks (SANs) in the real world. This detailed resource explains SAN technology and functions, showing how to manage, configure, and build your own SAN for a wide variety of applications.
A process that is always running on a computer system to service a particular set of requests. For example, in UNIX, lpd is a daemon that handles printing requests. Daemons are independent processes and not part of an application program. Application requests may be serviced by a daemon.
Data availability
The amounts of time that data are accessible to applications during those time periods when they are expected to be available. Data availability is often measured as a percentage of an elapsed year. For example, 99.95 percent availability equates to 4.38 hours of unavailability in a year (0.0005 365 24 = 4.38) for a set of data that is expected to be available all the time.
Data byte
A byte of user data as presented to a storage or communication facility. Data bytes are input to processes that encode for transmission or encrypt for privacy.
Data character
Any transmission character associated by the transmission code with a valid data byte.
Data Encryption Standard (DES)
A cryptographic data protection algorithm published by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) Publication No. 46.
Data frame
A frame containing information meant for FC-4 (ULP) or the link application.
Data manager
A computer program whose primary purpose is to present a convenient view of data to applications and to map that view to an internal representation on a system, subsystem, or device.
