Transmission Line Transformers, Fourth Edition

Chapter 13: Hints and Kinks

Sec 13.1: Introduction

Many of the changes presented in the second edition of this book are a result of the large number of requests by radio amateurs for more practical designs and "how-to-do." Therefore, some 100 designs have been added to this second edition to help satisfy the first request. Certainly not all needs are answered, since the author's interest and experience has been mainly related to matching coaxial cable to ground-fed antennas in the 1.7-MHz to 30-MHz range. Some of the designs bordered on other areas of interest, such as hybrids, antenna tuners and the VHF and UHF bands. It is hoped that sufficient information on design principles is presented in this second edition to enable readers working in these other areas to design successful transformers.

This chapter is concerned with the "how-to-do"; how to: (A) select the proper ferrites, (B) wind rod and toroidal transformers, (C) construct low-impedance coaxial cable and (D) handle and take care of ferrite transformers. The techniques described in the following sections evolved over many years of winding hundreds of transformers (it takes the author about three attempts in order to arrive at the final design). It is quite certain that there are many other techniques that can do the job as well (or even better). But those shown in this chapter have worked well for the author, and are offered here for the experimentalist.

Sec 13.2: Selecting Ferrites Substitutions

Efficiency measurements on many ferrites from major manufacturers have shown that the highest values have...
