3G: Third Generation. Name given to cellular telecommunication systems provided with enhanced Quality of Service in comparison to Second Generation systems. In the ITU, these systems are defined within the IMT-2000 framework.
3GPP: Third-Generation Partnership Project. Collaboration partnership in charge of the maintenance and development of the technical specifications for GSM, GPRS, EDGE and UMTS mobile systems. Established in December 1998, the 3GPP involves regional standardization organisms: ARIB, CCSA, ETSI, ATIS, TTA and TTC.
3GPP2: Third-Generation Partnership Project 2. Collaboration partnership in charge of the maintenance and development of the technical specifications for CDMA2000 3G mobile system. Established in December 1998, the 3GPP2 involves regional standardization organisms like ARIB, CCSA, TIA, TTA and TTC.
16-QAM: 16-Quadrature Amplitude Modulation. Modulation scheme based on amplitude modulation used to transmit 4 data bits per symbol. Used in HSDPA, it makes it possible to double the data rate of transmissions compared to QPSK used in Release 99 physical channels.

AAL: ATM Adaptation Layer. Protocol layer in charge of accommodating higher layer data into "ATM cells" following a specific format and size.
Active Set: Set of Node Bs that have assigned a downlink DPCH to the UE in the case of the soft-handover procedure.
AICH: Acquisition Indicator Channel. Downlink physical common channel involved in RACH access procedure. It conveys the Acquisition Indicators (AI) used by the UTRAN to acknowledge the reception of an access preamble.
