Urban Transportation Systems: Choices for Communities

The criteria for evaluating and judging various modes as to their suitability in various situations are outlined in Chap. 1. Modes are classified from the perspective of individual users, as appropriate to communities at large, and responding to several broad objectives that are effective at the national scale. The bulk of the book is devoted to a reasonably detailed review of every mode that could be considered for implementation in a given community. It is now possible to provide a general summary, which is presented in the following table. This has been done as an overall approach and characterization, recognizing that in each specific instance a service can be structured to operate at a higher or lower level than shown in the general summary.
